The Goldsteig
With 660 km it is the longest and most diverse trail of Germany. The Goldsteig takes you into the fascinating low mountain range landscapes of the Upper Palatinate Forest and the Bavarian Forest. From Marktredwitz in der Oberpfalz, the long-distance hiking trail initially runs in a southeasterly direction to Thanstein. There the Goldsteig divides into two variants – the southern route, which runs over the charming mountain ranges of the front Bavarian Forest, and the northern route over the thousands of the Bavarian Forest and through the Bavarian Forest National Park along the Bohemian border. The common end point or starting point in the opposite direction is the three-river city of Passau. Anyone who chooses the Goldsteig can get to know five nature parks and with them the different natural characters of the low mountain range landscape. In addition to the Bavarian Forest National Park and the highest peaks on the Green Roof of Europe, the highlights are the Waldnaabtal in the Upper Palatinate Forest, the Arberseewand, the Hölle near Falkenstein or the Ilz as one of the last undeveloped river landscapes. With the Blockmeer on the Lusen or the Dreisessel, some of the most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria are also on the route.
In addition, the Goldsteig is one of the top trails of Germany and thus one of the best and most beautiful long-distance hiking trails in Germany. The name of the new quality path is the Käserei Goldsteig, a cooperative of around 3,600 dairy farmers in the region and Germany’s largest mozzarella manufacturer.
The Goldsteig hikers will also get a taste for the around 70 hiker-friendly establishments that are distributed in the Bavarian Forest and Upper Palatinate Forest. These Goldsteig-Ge(h)nuss-Partners have a connection to the hiking trails, have the seal of quality hosts Germany in Bavaria, know the needs of hikers and cater to them accordingly. The hallmarks of these establishments are above all the typical regional cuisine, packed lunch service, a hiking professional in the house, weather information and maps and reservation service for the next accommodation.
